The Medicinal Cannabis Service

Cannabis-based products can help people who have already tried licensed medicines, which have failed to meet their clinical needs.

Medical cannabis prescribed, correctly, by a medical expert after a detailed assessment and with closely managed supervision, offers a potential treatment option for individuals with a range of physical and mental health issues. Medical cannabis cannot be prescribed by a GP.

Medical cannabis comes from three different species of cannabis: sativa, indica and ruderalis. It has been widely used as a medicine for thousands of years.

About Medical Cannabis

Key Details

Endocannabinoid system

Phytocannabinoids (from the cannabis plant) are a diverse group of compounds which act on the body’s endocannabinoid system, a vital part of our nervous system.

The endocannabinoid system is responsible for promoting sleep, appetite, stress reduction and modulation of pain. Activation or inhibition of the endocannabinoid system is important in the regulation of our cognitive function, inflammation, blood pressure and digestion, amongst other physiological functions.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

There are two main compounds found in medical cannabis which are believed to be beneficial in the management of several chronic conditions; CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

THC may be effective for nausea and vomiting, pain relief and improving appetite, while CBD has been shown to influence seizure management, pain relief and alleviate anxiety.

Treatments which include the whole plant – a combination of CBD and THC – are associated with greater efficacy than just the individual components. This is known as the “entourage effect”. Medical grade cannabis products, with differing ratios of CBD:THC, can be prescribed by a specialist doctor for particular conditions and symptoms.

Formulations

Medical cannabis comes in several forms, including oils which may be administered sublingually (under the tongue), capsules, topical creams as well as the dried flower for vaping.

Our specialist doctors will discuss with you the most appropriate way  to  take medical cannabis, depending upon your specific clinical requirements.

What is Medical Cannabis

In the UK, the term “medical cannabis” covers a range of cannabis-containing medicinal products which are manufactured solely for the treatment of medical conditions and prescribed only by specialist doctors. Medical cannabis cannot be prescribed by general practitioners.

Cannabis-containing medicinal products contain two active components, known as CBD and THC. There are a range of products available on prescription with varying ratios of CBD:THC, depending on the condition being treated.

What is the difference between recreational cannabis and medical grade cannabis?

Medical cannabis is manufactured under stringent quality-controlled conditions to ensure it  meets necessary standards of quality, purity and efficacy, guaranteeing its  composition (CBD/THC levels). This  enables specialist   doctors to make suitable prescribing decisions. At Re:Cognition Health, our specialist doctors  prescribe only medical grade cannabis products, which meet these standards.

Recreational cannabis, unlike medical cannabis, is not prepared under controlled conditions and therefore its quality and safety cannot be guaranteed. It is of unknown composition, often containing very high levels of THC, with little CBD, increasing the risk of unwanted side-effects. Levels of THC and CBD will  also vary from batch to batch, leading to unpredictable action with lack of reproducibility of effects.

Non-medical grade cannabis may also be contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms (e.g. bacteria or fungi) and other impurities which may be harmful. In addition, recreational or non-medical grade cannabis is often smoked, which can increase the risk of lung disease and respiratory problems. Recreational cannabis or non-medical grade cannabis is illegal in the UK and medical grade cannabis is only legal when prescribed by a specialist doctor registered by the General Medical Council (GMC).

Who is eligible to receive a prescription for Medical Cannabis?

Medical cannabis is used for the management of a number of chronic conditions.
Our specialist doctors will carry out a thorough assessment before prescribing medical cannabis, to ensure it is clinically appropriate for your condition.

Medical cannabis is usually considered if patients have tried at least two other licensed medicines, which have failed to manage their condition adequately.
